Leesa Prescod: Participation Ethics & Academic Support in Higher Education
What job title or term describes your professional identity, and why?
For my project, I created a professional portfolio using Wix. For my portfolio, I have created multiple sections to demonstrate my professional identity. I have a homepage with a short introduction about myself. The portfolio also has a resume page and a project page with subsections providing multiple categories and writing samples;and finally, a contact page.
On my portfolio, I labeled myself as a professional writer and a content designer. A Professional Writer could have various meanings. It could be a content writer. An educator, or both a document editor and designer. In my years at UMass Dartmouth, I have personally grown and expanded on these parts of professional writing, and the Master’s of Professional Writing Program and Communication (MPWC) strengthened it even more through their courses.
How does this project exemplify your identity and goals?
This project has secured my identity because it clearly outlines my strengths as a persuasive communicator.
One of my goals is to show that I can apply more skills than just writing. Switching from different universities andmajors, I’ve majored and minored in programs such as Education, English, and Art Education. Now that I am currently completing the MPWC program, this project shows I have combined all the skills I am passionate about to introduce myself as a professional writer and content designer.
My goal is to show that I’m not stuck in a box or to solely write or grade papers. While most of my employment experience and school work center around tutoring, education, and rhetoric studies, I want to share that I can provide more to my professional career beyond writing. I can understand how my audience will react to my content through the practice of design, composition, and delivery.
Describe yourself as a professional in 3 words.
Creative, expressive, and multi-talented.
I believe it’s important to utilize our other talents or specialized skills in the professional fields we’re majoring in. These talents could open new perspectives on how we write, educate, or introduce information to our audience. As professional communicators, it is important that we continue to be creative, expressive, and apply all our talents to further illustrate our message to others.
